Independence Park was designed by John Nolen and opened in 1905-06 as Charlotte's first public park. D. A. Tompkins made it happened because he thought mill workers needed a place to recreate. Its most dramatic feature is the Lillian Arhelger Memorial, built to commemorate the heoric sacrifice Lillian Arhelger made in 1931.
